One of the best ways to track all of your online traffic sources is through Google Analytics. Through Google Analytics you have the ability to view all of the traffic sources that are driving visits to your properties website. When you understand which marketing initiatives are driving traffic to your website and creating conversions, then you’re more prepared to strengthen your overall marketing strategy.
If part of your marketing strategy includes pay per click, it’s very important you create a free Google Analytics account. With analytics you can drill down to a day, week, or monthly overview of your organic traffic and your pay per click traffic. With a lot of our ReachLocal clients, their PPC campaigns list as the number one traffic source driving visits to their website. In addition you can view how many of those visits were new visitors. With the ability to view new visitors, you are assured that traffic to your website through PPC is not primarily current residents, but potential residents acquiring information about your properties! Also you can view the top keywords that are searched across the publishers, that drive organic traffic. Typically these keywords are brand related, such as your property name and/or variations of your property name. Compare your organic keywords to your ad words keywords, and you will notice PPC keywords drive more generic visits, such as “one bedroom apartments, luxury apartments, rent apartments”, etc. These keywords can potentially drive prospects that have never heard of your property.
Check out the below examples of a website focused on both their pay per click traffic and organic traffic and the comparisons between organic and pay per click keywords.
